The ibex hike

High up in Pitztal!

Embark on the captivating ibex hike, a route that holds a special place in our hearts!

With wonderfully long days and pleasant, sunny temperatures, it’s time to embark on a thrilling hiking adventure. And what better way to start than with the ibex hike (or “Steinbockwanderung” in German)? Located just one kilometre from the Sportalm Pitztal resort, this hike promises an unforgettable experience. The route begins at the car park between Plangeroß and Weißwald in Pitztal. From there, a well-maintained but steep hiking trail leads you to the Rüsselsheimer Hütte mountain hut, at 2,328 metres above sea level. While it may be tempting to stop there for refreshments, we suggest waiting until the return journey. Beyond the hut, the trail ascends steeply over scree before turning left onto a moderately steep path, guiding you to the Gahwinden viewpoint, situated at a breathtaking altitude of over 2,600 metres above sea level. Here, you’ll be treated to a spectacular panorama showcasing the majestic glaciers of the region. To complete the hike, simply retrace your steps. During this mountain tour, you’ll conquer a total elevation gain of 1,070 metres over 9.4 kilometres. The ascent typically takes around three hours, while the descent can be completed in approximately two.
